Three hours of class per week. This semester-length seminar will deal with
significant works of the most celebrated Persian classical poets. Reading
and analysis of representative selections from various genres of poetry in
Persian literature. A literary-historical survey of Persian poetry from the
fourth to the sixth century with the emphasis on Shahnameh and Vis-o Ramin.
This seminar mostly focuses on the Persian poetry after the advent of Islam to the sixth centaury, and because of the importance of the Shahnameh and Vis-o Ramin in this period; we spend more time discussing the main points, and not details, of these two books regarding their literary characteristics.
Topics will include:
Rudaki - Shahid Balkhi - Daghighi - Rabe'e - Ferdowsi - Onsori - Fkhr
al-Din As'd Gorgani - Abusa'id Abilkhayr - Farrokhi Sistani - Asadi Tusi -
Manuchehri Damghani - Naser Khosrow - Masod Sa'd-e Salman.
