Norouz Mobarak: Happy Norouz
Join us as we celebrate Norouz, the Iranian New Year. Deeply rooted in Zoroastrianism (the ancient pre-Islamic religion of Iran), Norouz goes back to the Sassanid period and has been celebrated for at least 3000 years.
It is an occasion when life with all its glory is celebrated and cherished, a feast of joy, hope and renewal. Everyone sings traditional songs, and poems of Hafez and verses from the Holy books are recited. Bring your family to participate in this millennia-old tradition. Learn about the ritual ceremonial table, Sofreh-e-Haft Sinn (Haft-Sin: literally seven dishes setting, each one beginning with the Persian letter sinn). The number seven has been sacred in Iran since antiquity, and the seven dishes stand for the seven angelic heralds of life-rebirth, health, happiness, prosperity, joy, patience and beauty.
A special Storytelling piece in Persian and English written by Vida Gharehmani and Torange Yeghiazarian
Explore the dimensions of Iranian music by Hafez Modirzadeh, playing the Ney and Daf, performing traditional Iranian music.
The Ballet Afsaneh Dance Company led by Sharlyn Sawyer will present traditional dances based on classical Persian themes.
And through out this festive day Homa Hanjani has created a wonderful hands-on activity, where each child can create their own Haft-sin!
Hope to see you there!
