Saideh Pakravan will be reading from her recently published book, "The Arrest of Hoveyda", at Gallery Ovissi in Emeryville on March 10, 2001 at 7 p.m. Part fiction, part memoirs, this collection of stories by an insider sheds new light on the main actors of the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The title story in "The Arrest of Hoveyda: Stories of the Iranian Revolution" (Mazda Publishers) is a narrative in the distinct voices of five persons who took part in the meetings of a restricted council in a last minute attempt to save the Shah&Mac226;s crumbling regime. Putting their own spin and interpretations on the chaotic times they went through then, they talk about the events that led to the arrest of Amir Abbas Hoveyda, the Shah&Mac226;s loyal and devoted Prime Minister for thirteen years. While describing and analyzing the flow of events and the psychology of the men who controlled them (or were controlled by them), the tale is one of might and fall and a reflection on public service, on revolution and retribution, an on power and what it does to those who wield it. In other stories, characters real or invented play out their shifting perceptions of the events that changed a people and a country&Mac226;s fate. Little-known historic circumstances and players caught in a moment of truth or of reckoning make this multi-layered book a must for those who know Iran, as well as for those who want to know it better.
Saideh Pakravan is Iranian born, French-educated, and lives in the United States. A writer of both fiction and non-fiction and a poet, she is also the editor in chief of a quarterly, Chanteh. Her works have appeared in The Potomac Review, Poet Lore, Clayx, the Literary Review, Belles Lettres, the Chiron Review, the Multicultural Review, etc.
