Guilty? Or not Guilty?
Mohammad Ali Bat-Haee, Ph. D.

You have heard these words many many times in movies that deal with court situations, or if it has happened that you yourself have, in reality, been in court, say for receiving a speeding ticket. You have been asked to plea "guilty" and pay the cost of the court, etc. Well, in this short article, we will talk about feeling guilty and the meaning of GUILT itself. We will also talk about the appropriate and inappropriate guilt. So lean back, relax and read. Guilt is an appropriate and useful feeling when you have harmed someone. Some examples are:
1. Violation of an agreement of any sort.
2. Physical violence.
3. Causing the loss of something of real or sentimental value to another.
4. Verbal assaults on others, including criticism.
5. Failing to carry out the responsibilities of a role you assumed.
6. Harm to society or nature, such as pollution. If you have harmed someone and feel guilty, this is a sign of high moral values and is a strength. You are advised to take the following steps:
1. Apologize.
2. Make an attempt to make restitution (fix the hurt). If the person you have harmed is not available (deceased, etc.) make restitution by being especially kind to a living person.
3. Convert guilt to its counterpart (the other element of conscience), which is Resistance to Temptation. Develop a clear action plan for preventing further harm of the same sort. Guilt, on the other hand, is inappropriate and harmful when you have not actually hurt someone. Others will often tell you that you have hurt them when they have actually been hurt by their own thoughts. These cases involve you not meeting the expectations of others, unless you agreed to meet them. (For example, if you do not want to cook supper and your spouse is angry, you have no reason to feel guilty unless you agreed to cook supper that time. If your parents are disappointed because you do not choose to have children, you have no reason to feel guilty for not meeting their expectations). If you have inappropriate guilt, do the followings:
1. Remind yourself frequently that each person is responsible for his/her own feelings.
2. Remind yourself of the advantages of what you did or did not do and why that was a better decision for you than meeting the other person's expectations.
3. Assess whether you think the other person is trying to manipulate you with guilt.
4. Confront the other person about this manipulation if you think it is necessary.

Special Olympic News
Another gold medal in weightlifting, two world records, and the title of "The most powerful man of the world" for Iran !! Hossein Rezazadeh of Iran Hossein Rezazadeh of Iran broke two world records to take the gold medal in the men's super heavy weight (+105 kilogram) division of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games weightlifting competition on Tuesday. Rezazadeh broke his own world snatch record of 206 kg with a stunning
lift of 212.5 kg and then made 260 kg in the clean and jerk section for an overall world record of 472.5 kg. Germany's Ronny Weller had to settle for silver for the second Olympic Games running, despite setting world snatch and overall records of his own only to see them eclipsed within minutes by the Iranian. Ashot Danielyan of Armenia Armenia's Ashot Danielyan claimed bronze while Russia's defending Olympic champion Andrei Chemerkin finished fourth after failing with an audacious attempt to take gold with a final lift of 272.5 kg. Rezazadeh's success and Chemerkin's failure broke Russia's 44-year-old stranglehold on the Olympic super heavy weight division. The Soviets and Russians had won the event at every edition of the Games since the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games, apart from in 1984 when they boycotted the Los Angeles' Games. http://www.olympics.com/eng/news/d12/BCAL-4PJDZA.html

His gold was Iran's second in weightlifting in as many days following the success of his compatriot Hossein Tavakoli in the men's 105 kg category. SYDNEY, September 25: Iran's long wait for a medal in the Sydney 2000 Olympics ended on Monday when Hossein Tavakoli won Gold in Men's 105kg Weightlifting Competition. Twenty three year old Tavakoli 190kg in the snatch and 235kg in the clean and jerk. Tavakoli's total weight lifted was 425kg. Iran held its breath as Tavakoli lifted 190kg in snatch, placing him in fourth place on the scoreboard. However, Tavakoli would lift 235kg in clean and jerk to
take Gold. "Ivanov had a tactic to defeat my opponents",

By: Makan Borhanjoo, M.S.W.

He was one of the ones I couldn't place as Persian. I didn't really like him at first. He was quiet, but cocky at the same time. I guess he was just shy and people interpreted that as arrogance. I talked to him for the first time on a busy Thursday night. It was the "DJ" night, and pretty much the only place downtown with some sort of life for all ages. I was wearing my "Farvahar" shirt. It's the Zoroastrian icon that often gets confused with "Mitra" or "Ahuramazda." Anyway, I was really surprised when he asked me why I have a "Farvahar" shirt on. He said that he is Persian, and that he has lived here for years. He wasn't your typical Persian guy; he had light purple hair, neatly cut and trimmed, with big black wired frame square glasses. I got to know him better over the next few weeks, and went through his mood and hair color changes. It was purple at first, then jet black, then pink, and it was blue for the longer part of the time I knew him. From what I remember, he lived in New York for a while, and that's where he got hooked on heroine. He said because his (then) girlfriend was into it, and he would do anything for her. He was getting help now, going to his NA and AA meetings and living in a boarding house. Boy he loved coffee!

He could down those suckers faster that you could say slow down! He also was a great artist. Working at the Gallery, I've seen a lot of artists and wanna be artists, and a lot of pretentious art that I wouldn't even hang in my tool shed (not that I have one!), but he was amazing. I saw one of his portfolios once, with over sixty pencil, silver point, and ink drawings. The expertise of detail, figure, proportion, and overall performance was absolutely astonishing. I asked him if I could showit around the cafÈ, and everyone agreed with me. Then he started to come and see this girl that worked in the cafÈ. This sweet, confused, fairytale reading kind of girl that never grew past age 12, even though she was 22. And of course, she had the innocent looks to go with it. In short, he fell for her and she wanted nothing to do with him. She said that he gave her bad vibes. I tried to break it to him slowly on a Tuesday night poetry reading, but he didn't want to listen to me. He had his mind set on her. He would drive by on his beat up Saab everyday to check her out. I guess that has some to do with addictive personalities. After the cafÈ girl got fired (for a different reason), I didn't see him for almost a month. I saw him again on a poetry night, hardly able to walk, and euphoric. I pulled up his sleeve, and saw about twenty needle marks. I didn't know if I should be angry, sad, or what. He didn't say much, didn't stop me, didn't bring any excuses. He simply said "Shod dig'ge" (It just happened). Then he crept inside the cafÈ and bought his black, no sugar, no cream Guatemalan roast. I did never see him after that. I don't know where he is, or if he "is". I miss him in astrange way though.

Where does your money GO?
Niloufar Abedi

Do you know how you spend your money?
Do you spend it on your living expenses?!
If so, how much are you spending for each of these expenses? There is a good chance that you can not answer the last question with the precision it requires. If you are like most of us, you have an idea of how much you are spending on your living expenses every month, and I can make a safe bet that your idea of how much you spend is considerably less than the amount of money it actually costs you to keep up with your life style. The good news is that you can learn the exact amount you spend monthly and use the information to have complete control over your money. Your personal finance can be the most consistent and dependable part of your life. If this sounds surprising, it should not. Think about it. Money can be handled with exactness and precision, because you can measure it in dollars and cents. The reason that most of you face many unexpected circumstances in your financial life is the lack of knowledge and understanding that are essential tools for maintaining balance in your financial life. There are two major categories in your personal finance. Your income and your expenses. Your income includes all the different revenues you have for receiving money on regular basis. It is a subject that will be covered in the next three article. In this article, the main concentration will be on the knowledge you need to monitor and control your expenses. This knowledge will help you to develop a complete picture of the exact amount of money you need to keep up with your life style, and the understanding of this picture will give you the ability to control and enhance your financial life. There are three tools that you use for developing a system to monitor and control your living expenses. they are: Tracking, Trimming, and Holding. Tracking: The action that will help you learn the exact amount of money you are spending for different expenses. It is important to realize thatexpenses whether they occur daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually have a direct effect on the amount of money you spend monthly. When you track all these expenses and anticipate the amount of money you have to have for each of them, then you can eliminate the guesswork from your finances, and you can make effective financial decisions and implement them with consistency and dependability. Your living expenses can generally be divided into eight categories. They are: Monthly expenses: Rent, food, utilities and so on. The expenses usually provide the necessities of life. Small expenses: Car wash, parking fees, afternoon coffee and so on. The expenses that keep your life running smoothly, yet they are so small that you don't consider them part of your expenses. Big expenses: Insurance, vacation, membership fees and so on. The expenses that occur once or twice a year, but their payments effect your annual budget. Seasonal expenses: Summer camps, winter's higher utility bills, spring gardens. The expenditures occur on a seasonal basis. Hidden expenses: Babysitter, the gardener, the cleaning people. Any weekly or biweekly payments you make. On these payments or purchases you are spending two to four extra payments per year. Special occasions. Annual events like birthdays and anniversaries, lunch and dinner invitations. The total amount you spend on a yearly base has a major impact on your financial life. Holiday expenses. The entertainments, gifts, meals, travel, and various other minor costs of getting together with groups of people. Surprise expenses. An old friend dropping in and you spend a weekend on town or a medical emergency, the unexpected events of your life. To learn exactly how much you have spend on these eight categories in the last two years. Follow these steps. Gather all your checkbooks, canceled checks, computerized billings, and other records you have for the last two years. Create a chart for each category of your living expenses and write down how much money you spend on each item in that category. (The more itemized you make these categories, the more useful the information will be for your future decisions.) Add the total for each item in each category and divide the result by 24. The number will show you the average monthly money allocation for each item. If you multiply this monthly average by 12, you will know exactly how much money you are spending for each item in each category of your living expenses. Trimming: The information from your tracking actions will give you the ability of making knowledgeable decisions about how you want to deal with your different expenses. Divide all your expenses into two categories. Fixed and variable. The fixed expenditure are relatively few and include such items as rent/mortgage, car payments, insurance, and so on. The majority of your expenses are in the variable category. Here is where you can make a major difference in your financial life and reduce your expenses to a large degree without effecting your life style. Review the expenses that you spend more than $200 on them monthly. Decide which of the items can be used less often. Make a selection on the items that you can spend $25 to $30 less per month. If you can make that decision on 30 items, your action will make a major influence in your finances. For example, if you trim $30 from 30 different items in different categories, you will reduce your living expenses by $10,800 annually. ($30 X 30 = $900, $900 X 12= $10,800). This is called trimming. The $30 reduction on $200 expense will not inconvenience you to a major degree. However, $10,800 will make a considerable financial impact on your life, especially if your yearly income is in the $30-$40,000 range. To make trimming work for you. Follow these steps. Use your information from tracking to decide the amount of money you will allocate for every item on the yearly basis. Then create a system that can help you keep track of what you are spending and use it to monitor what you spend in each category month by month. If you use up any allocation early and want to spend more in that category, you can analyze the other categories and decide if you can trim a little more in from them to compensate for this extra money you want to spend. Holding: Hold on to the money that you may be throwing out right now. Do you send in extra money to IRS and get a tax return at the end of the year. The money that is sitting in IRS account does not give you any interest. Does your mortgage company withhold your property taxes and insurance payments and pay them for you? These payments are due on semi-annual basis. If you hold that money instead of the company, you can be earing interest on them. There are many other actions that you take which is costing you money for very little convenience. The amount may be as little as a $100 to $500 a year, but if you calculate the total of capital and interest you can make in 20 to 30 years, you will be less hesitant to let go of your money so fast. The practice of monitoring and controlling your spending habits will take some time. However, when you finally do master the art, the knowledge and the ability will give you complete control over deciding how to spend your money. The greater advantage of this system is the fact that you have the control necessary on your financial life to know where you can free up some of your money if you want to or need to. Remember that spending habits are just that. Habits. Making a change means breaking old habits and establishing new ones. You use your time and labor to earn the money you have, and it is very reasonable for you to take the privilege of deciding how exactly you want to spend your money.
